Friday 24th May, 11:15 am – RCC Bermuda were advised that a guest onboard the local charter boat RISING SON had fallen resulting in a suspected back injury, the Bermuda Coast Guard quickly attended and assessed the patient. The patient was found to be a passenger onboard the cruise ship NORWEGIAN JOY and considered well enough for the Coast Guard to transport back to the ship, RCC Bermuda liaised with the cruise ship and the onboard medical team met with the patient on arrival in Dockyard.

Friday 24th May, 3:42 pm – Bermuda Coast Guard were on patrol in Castle Roads when they observed the local 26ft Centre Console BOA VIDA taking on water with 7 people onboard, the water ingress was to much to manage and the decision was made to beach the vessel. It was not possible to contact a marine contractor for help so the Coast Guard assisted further by pumping out the vessel and towing it to the boat yard in St Davids to be lifted out of the water.

Tuesday 21st May 1:30 am – RCC Bermuda received a call from the Singapore based management company of the Hong Kong registered container ship BERNHARD SCHULTE. A crew member had an accident resulting in gash to the head and a temporary loss of consciousness. RCC Bermuda spoke directly to the ship’s captain with the United States Coast Guard Flight Surgeon conferenced in on the call, the ship was around 370 miles north east of Bermuda and the casualty needed medical attention as soon as possible. As air assets are not available in Bermuda consideration was given to flying a Helicopter from Elizabeth City to Bermuda to refuel and fly on to the BERNHARD SCHULTE. After calculating the timings involved the patient would receive medical care in around 18 hours with a helicopter evacuation, a similar time to the ship steaming to Bermuda at full speed. At around 10:30 on Tuesday evening the patient was transferred to Pilot Boat St David to meet an ambulance waiting at Ordnance Island, St Georges Harbour.

Saturday 18th May, 4:55 am – RCC Bermuda received a telephone call from New York air traffic control advising a flight had diverted to Bermuda due to a medical emergency onboard, the flight enroute from San Juan to Philadelphia was around 200 miles out allowing approximately 40 minutes before landing. RCC Bermuda followed the procedure for an emergency landing outside of normal airport operating hours by paging / calling emergency services and the required airport staff. The Airbus A320 Frontier Airlines flight landed at 05:30 and the patient was transferred to a waiting ambulance.

Friday 17th May, 6:35 pm – RCC Bermuda receive a located EPIRB alert with the distress position being within Hamilton Harbour, a search of the database for visiting yachts show the EPIRB is from the German registered visiting yacht MEU alongside at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC). The Dockmaster at RBYC was contacted and kindly visited the yacht and confirmed the EPIRB was in alert due to accidental activation.

Tuesday 7th May, 11:20 pm – RCC Bermuda received a satellite telephone call from the Staff Captain onboard the cruise ship DISNEY DREAM enroute from Fort Lauderdale to Ponta Delgada. The ship in a position 142 miles east south east of Bermuda called to advise they have sighted a capsized Catamaran approximately 20m in length. The ship circled the upturned vessel but was unable to see the name or any distinguishing numbers, photographs were forwarded to RCC Bermuda and the ship proceeded to the Azores. RCC Bermuda liaised with the United States Coast Guard and RCC Norfolk was able to advise that the yacht was most probably related to a case they worked in October 2023 involving a Catamaran which capsized, the 4 crew abandoned to a raft and were recovered by Coast Guard in a position 145 miles south east of Wilmington North Carolina. RCC Bermuda issued a Notice to Mariners regarding the floating hazard to navigation.

Saturday 4th May, 4:15 am – RCC Bermuda was contacted by JRCC Denmark regarding the Danish registered 45ft sloop BINCK enroute from St Maarten to the Azores, with 4 POB, the yacht is reported to be taking on water from a damaged rudder stock. The water ingress was under control by the bilge pump but could become more serious, another Danish registered yacht was accompanying BINCK and they were in a position approximately 400 Miles south of Bermuda in the Search and Rescue region managed by RCC San Juan, Puerto Rico. The yacht intends to divert to Bermuda for repairs, information on the safety equipment carried on board was sent to RCC Bermuda, the situation remained largely the same and BINCK arrived in Bermuda on the afternoon of Tuesday 7th May without further incident.

Friday 3rd May, 2:15 pm – RCC Bermuda was advised that the cruise ship CELEBRITY APEX had diverted to Bermuda on passage from Fort Lauderdale to Ponta Delgada in order to disembark a 94 year old female passenger who has suffered a broken leg. The ships estimated time of arrival was given as Saturday at 4:15 in the afternoon, considering the forecast sea state and fact that the patient will be transferred on a stretcher consideration was given to carrying out a transfer to the Pilot boat in Murrays Anchorage, another option would be to transfer the patient by ships tender so the patient could embark on the boat deck and be lowered to the water. When the ship arrived it was arranged for the patient to disembark by ships tender with a member of the medical department onboard. The tender was escorted to ordnance Island by the pilot / rescue boat St George and the patient transferred to waiting ambulance for onward transport to the hospital.
